A leadership tussle following the death of the Chief Imam has prompted the Agege Local Government Area of Lagos State to seal off the popular ‘Mosalasi Alhaja’ mosque.

The directive, issued by the Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Ganiyu Egunjobi, was announced on Saturday to prevent a potential breach of public peace.

The dispute reportedly stems from a disagreement between the family of the late Chief Imam, Sheikh Habib Abdulmajid, and his deputy, Sheikh Mustapha Muktar. The rivalry has caused tension within the Hausa community in the area.

Egunjobi explained that the closure, effective immediately, was necessary to forestall any escalation of the conflict. During a visit to the mosque, he ensured that his orders were enforced and assured residents that adequate security measures were in place to maintain calm in the vicinity.

The council chairman also revealed plans to invite all parties involved in the dispute to a stakeholders’ meeting. The objective, he said, is to mediate the crisis, resolve the leadership contention, and restore normalcy to the mosque and its community.

The situation underscores the delicate balance required to maintain peace in a diverse and densely populated area like Agege. Authorities have urged residents to remain calm while the issue is addressed.
