At least 46 soldiers from the Nigerien Defense and Security Forces (SDF) were killed in a coordinated assault by militants linked to the Islamic State in the Greater Sahara (EIGS) on Saturday. The attack targeted a military outpost in Iknewane, Tilia Department, near Niger’s border with Mali, in what security sources described as a large-scale and intense ambush.
According to reports, heavily armed insurgents stormed the base, overwhelming security personnel and seizing nine of the 16 military vehicles stationed there. The attackers also looted weapons and ammunition before retreating.
Beyond the heavy casualties, at least a dozen soldiers were reportedly taken hostage, while several others remain missing. Some troops managed to escape on foot and were later rescued.
In response, the Niger Armed Forces (FAN), supported by units from the National Guard (GNN), deployed a convoy of approximately 20 vehicles from Tahoua to the attack site to conduct counter-operations.
This marks the second major assault on the Iknewane base in recent months. On September 18, 2024, EIGS militants carried out a similar raid, killing at least 24 soldiers.
The Tahoua Region, particularly its border zones with Mali, has seen a sharp rise in militant violence. The Nigerien government continues to struggle with persistent security threats as armed groups increasingly target both military and civilian locations.
