
At least 30 passengers lost their lives in a fatal road accident in the Odigbo Local Government Area of Ondo State on Saturday when two commercial buses collided head-on and caught fire.
The accident, which occurred at the Onipetesi axis along the Ore-Lagos Expressway, involved 32 passengers. According to eyewitness reports, excessive speeding led to the crash.
Tragically, 28 victims were burnt beyond recognition, while two survivors who were rescued with severe injuries later succumbed before reaching the hospital. Two others remain in critical condition and are receiving treatment.
Confirming the incident, Ondo State Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Samuel Ibitoye, revealed that a preliminary investigation indicated that one of the buses was driving against traffic.
He urged motorists to avoid reckless driving, ensure proper vehicle maintenance, and adhere to road safety regulations. Ibitoye also called on passengers to hold drivers accountable for dangerous driving, stressing that road safety is a collective responsibility.
