Normalcy has been restored in Kuje Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) after a deadly clash on Friday evening, which resulted in the tragic death of one person due to a suspected accidental discharge of a firearm by a police officer.
A correspondent from the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) visited the area on Saturday and reported that life had returned to normal, with residents seen conducting their daily activities without fear.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident occurred around 7 p.m. at the Tipper Garage area of Kuje, following a heated argument between two men. The argument reportedly began after the men left a nearby supermarket. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, a police officer stationed at the supermarket intervened. However, despite the officer's efforts, the argument intensified and began to draw a crowd.
One eyewitness, Mr. Bulus Ayuba, explained that as the situation became chaotic, the officer attempted to fire a warning shot into the air to disperse the growing crowd. Unfortunately, Ayuba claimed that someone in the crowd accidentally touched the firearm, causing it to misfire and fatally strike a man in the head.
Another eyewitness, Mr. Philip Adeyeye, described the scene following the shooting, stating that the area became tense as youths began to protest in anger. In retaliation, the irate youths set fire to a vehicle parked at the supermarket. The protests intensified, leading to the deployment of military personnel and additional police officers to restore order.
The Commissioner of Police for the FCT, Mr. Olatunji Disu, confirmed the incident, stating that the police officer involved in the shooting had been taken into custody for questioning. He also assured the public that an investigation into the matter had already begun to determine the circumstances surrounding the tragic event.
