A violent clash between two rival cult groups in Onne, Eleme Local Government Area of Rivers State, has left three people dead, prompting a swift police response.
The confrontation began on Friday, January 31, when one group launched an attack, killing two members of the opposing side. In retaliation, a counter-attack was carried out the following day, escalating the violence.
Among the deceased was a notorious cultist identified as Christopher, popularly known as ‘Small Lighter,’ who was allegedly responsible for terrorizing the area.
Confirming the incident on Sunday, the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings.
“Yes, I can confirm the cult clash. Three persons were killed, and three suspects have been taken into custody,” Iringe-Koko stated.
She further explained, *“One of the suspects, known as ‘Small Lighter,’ reportedly killed a rival cult member, which led to a retaliatory attack that resulted in his own death. Another individual had been killed earlier, bringing the total casualties to three.”*
The police spokesperson assured residents that security operatives had been deployed to restore order in the community, adding that investigations were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
