The lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, has revealed the reasons behind the scuffle between her and the senate president, Godswill Akpabio.
Natasha clashed with Senate President Godswill Akpabio during a plenary session over a seating arrangement in the Senate on Thursday.
"Night Club" Remark and Apology
During a Senate session, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan attempted to speak without prior recognition, prompting Senate President Godswill Akpabio to rebuke her, stating, "Senator Natasha, you cannot speak without being asked or invited to speak in the Senate. This is not a nightclub."
This comment was met with criticism from various quarters, including women's advocacy groups who viewed it as disrespectful and indicative of gender bias.
In response to the backlash, Senate President Akpabio publicly apologized, expressing that he did not intend to denigrate any woman and emphasizing his respect for women. He acknowledged the flood of calls and messages he and his wife received following the incident.
Seat Relocation Controversy
Tensions escalated when Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan discovered that her designated seat had been relocated without prior notice. She protested this sudden change, citing Order 10 of the Senate Standing Rules, which protects members' privileges. The situation became heated, leading Senate President Akpabio to call on security to remove her from the chamber. However, intervention from fellow lawmakers prevented the situation from escalating further.
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed her frustration, stating, "I have been through a lot. Ever since the 'night club' incident, I have been pulled from many activities. I have remained quiet... I just want to be given the opportunity to work." Her supporters argue that these incidents highlight broader issues of gender dynamics and the challenges female lawmakers face within Nigerian politics.
These events have sparked a broader conversation about respect, inclusion, and the treatment of female senators in Nigeria's legislative processes.
