Peter Obi, the Labour Party's presidential candidate in the 2023 election, recently stated that Nigeria's current socio-economic conditions are worse than during the era of former military president Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), who led from 1985 to 1993. Obi made these remarks on February 20, 2025, after attending the launch of IBB's autobiography, "A Journey in Service," in Abuja.
In his comments, Obi highlighted that nations such as Bangladesh, India, Vietnam, and Ghana, which were on par with Nigeria in the low Human Development Index (HDI) category when IBB left office in 1992, have since advanced to medium and high HDI levels. In contrast, Nigeria has either stagnated or declined, remaining in the low HDI category.
Obi also praised IBB for his significant contributions to Nigeria's economy, particularly in fostering growth in the financial sector and supporting entrepreneurship and private sector development. He noted that under IBB's leadership, Nigeria experienced substantial economic growth and implemented policies that promoted national cohesion and development.
Furthermore, Obi commended IBB for acknowledging that Chief MKO Abiola won the June 12, 1993, presidential election. He described this admission as a crucial step toward national healing, unity, and progress.
