For the second time in a week, a gas explosion has rocked Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, destroying parts of a 104-room storey building.
The latest incident occurred on Friday at approximately 8:05 p.m. along Ejiba Road, near Ejiba Bridge, following an unattended gas cylinder explosion. This comes just days after a similar fire incident at No. 90, Koro Compound, Oke-Apomu Quarters, on Wednesday, which engulfed a 20-room building.
Speaking on the Friday explosion, the spokesman of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Adekunle, confirmed that firefighters arrived swiftly to battle the blaze.
"The firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the fire, and out of 104 rooms in the storey building, they successfully saved 89, with only 15 affected by the inferno," he stated.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a gas cooker left unattended.
The Director of the Kwara State Fire Service, Prince Falade John, expressed concern over the frequency of such incidents, warning residents to exercise extreme caution while handling gas appliances.
"This is the second fire outbreak within a week caused by negligence in handling gas cookers. We strongly advise the public to prioritize safety at all times," he cautioned.
Authorities have urged residents to adopt strict safety measures to prevent further occurrences, as investigations into the latest explosion continue.
