The youth accused their leaders of failing to meet up with their expectations and of abandoning the standard of societal development established by the post independence leadership.
The President of the group, Mallam Ibrahim Waiya, spoke to our correspondent shortly after the group’s one-day national youth conference held in Minna, Niger State.
The group’s stand, came few days after the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Mohammed Abubakar II, scolded the region’s political leaders for neglecting the zone and failing to live by the principles laid down by the late Sardauna of Sokoto, Sir Ahmadu Bello.
Waiya specifically blamed the leaders in the region for the pervasive poverty, poor infrastructural base, and complete reliance on statutory allocations, youth unemployment and general under-development.
He accused them of masterminding insecurity, which they said had led to incessant religious and ethnic unrest in the north.
He asked the youths to find solutions to the problems created for them by their elders, who he insisted, had failed to provide the needed political leadership and direction for growth and progress of the region.
Though, he asked the youths to respect the elders, he maintained that the youngsters should disagree with their leaders on issues based only on principle.
He advised the leaders to direct their attention and resources to finding solutions to multiple problems confronting the north, especially the persistent religious crises.
He noted that it was high time the old politicians stepped aside and allow the youths to plan the political future of the north.
