A private guard attached to the newly appointed Secretary to the Delta State Government, Mr. Ovouzorie Macaulay, on Saturday reportedly shot and killed two persons for allegedly stealing recharge cards being sold by his (the guard's) wife.
The security guard, identified as Mr. Atoma Umukoro, is one of the security men attached to the private residence of the SSG at Owhelogbo in Isoko North Local Government Area of the state.
Our correspondent gathered that Umokoro had confronted one of the deceased, Henry Obona, 20, accusing him of stealing his wife's cards.
In the ensued argument, Umukoro was said to have opened fire on Obona.
In the heat of the tension that ensued, one Odhegba Ujiro, 27, who also approached the rampaging guard in a bid to calm frayed nerves was also killed by the security guard, who fired the second shot at close range. Ujiro was said to have died on the spot.
Investigation by our correspondent however revealed that the brother of the first victim, Obona, who was based in the neighbouring Ozoro community, was allegedly the one who sold the recharge cards.
The death of the two young men sparked spontaneous reactions from youths in the town who razed down two buildings belonging to the security guard.
Some cars that were parked in the vicinity of the house were also not spared the wrath of the rampaging youths.
Another car belonging to the SSG's brother, Mr. Felix Obrokumo, was also reportedly set ablaze by another mob in the community.
The SSG confirmed the incident through a text message but said the incident had nothing to do with him.
"He (Mukoro) is just one of the over 50 people working for me. I don't have a Chief Security Officer.
"He committed the alleged crime after his working hours and has nothing to do with my person or office," Macaulay said.
The State Police Public Relations Officer, Charles Muka, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, who confirmed the incident, noted that the culprit had been arrested and transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department.
He added that investigations had commenced on the alleged killings.
