A source in the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police told CRIME DIGEST that the child would be the second child of the young lady. He said, “She probably disposed of the baby because it was her second child and the father ran away, just like the first one. She lives with her mother and she denied being pregnant when her mother asked her. Thank God for the people in the compound, who heard the child crying; they were the ones that rescued the baby. Initially, she denied being the mother of the child, but after further questioning, she confessed.”
CRIME DIGEST gathered that it was a tenant, Loveth, that first heard the baby’s cry. She immediately alerted the landlady, Bola Adeoye, who immediately put together a rescue party to save the infant.
“Immediately the landlady was alerted, she gathered some people that pulled the child from the pit toilet,” he said.
Another police source told CRIME DIGEST that although Agbi owned up to being the mother of the child, she denied throwing the child into the toilet.
He said, “She said she didn’t throw the child into the toilet. According to her, she was pressed and she went to the toilet to ease herself. Unknown to her, it was the baby that wanted to come out. While she was at the pit toilet, the baby fell into the toilet. She wanted to call her mother to come, but she discovered the battery of her cell-phone was low, but her landlady had been alerted. When her landlady accosted her about the ownership of the child, she initially denied before admitting up later.”
CRIME DIGEST gathered that she didn’t confide in her mother about the pregnancy and her boyfriend, who she claimed was responsible, had abandoned her. He said, “When her mother asked her if she was pregnant, she denied it. It was when the whole plight began that her mother knew about the pregnancy. Her boyfriend, who she claims is responsible, has also abandoned her when he suggested to her to abort but she refused. She said he stopped calling her, asked her never to come see him and changed his telephone number.”
The Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Samuel Jinadu, confirmed the incident, stating that Agbi would be made to face the consequence of her action.
Jinadu said, “The woman has been granted bail to go and treat herself in a hospital. The baby was taken to a juvenile welfare centre at Alakara. She would come back to face the consequence.”
