The corpse of Alade Abaniwonda, a former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Lagos East Senatorial candidate who allegedly committed suicide by jumping into the lagoon in Lagos on Monday haw been recovered by the police.

The police officers, who have been combing the lagoon since the alleged suicide found the body on Wednesday.

Witness accounts state that Abaniwonda, 56, and a ministerial nominee, jumped into the lagoon at Leventis bus stop, Marina, about 3.10pm in circumstances the police said they are investigating.

Abaniwonda’s death is still a shock to his family, friends and fellow politicians. His driver, simply identified as Wasiu, who was at the scene of the incident, has been in police custody since then.

He said Abaniwonda was hale and hearty that fateful morning before his mysterious death, adding that the deceased had stopped by the road side to relieve himself and fell into the lagoon.

“He ate his food after we left the bank and told me he was going to use a toilet down the road side by the lagoon," he said. "Later I heard people shouting that a man has jumped into the lagoon. He was still struggling to get out when I got there but he later went down inside the water.”

Abaniwonda's corpse has since been deposited in a public mortuary for autopsy.
