Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says that the club will be going all-out to win a domestic cup this year as they have no distraction of European football.

Gerrard returned from a groin problem in Wednesday's Carling Cup victory at Brighton and has now voiced his intention to lead the Reds out at Wembley for the first time at the end of the season.

Both Liverpool's FA Cup and Carling Cup triumphs in recent times came while Wembley was being rebuilt and the games were hosted at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. Now Gerrard is targeting success at the home of football.

"When you play for Liverpool it's all about winning trophies. We've got to take every cup competition seriously,'' he said. "That was the message from the manager before we went out at Brighton. He said we want to be one step closer to a major cup final.

"Being captain as well, I want nothing more than to go to Wembley with the rest of the lads and lift a cup. We haven't been to a major cup final for a long time so we've got to take every cup seriously - especially when there's no Europe. That makes it a bit easier for us to put stronger sides out.

"Kenny Dalglish has assembled a fantastic squad and we've got a couple of good players for each position, so even when he mixes it up or rests people, we've still got a strong side.''

Gerrard has yet to start a game under the new Dalglish regime, but he is certainly pleased with what he has seen so far.

He said: "I've been really happy with what I've seen. Since Kenny's come in, there has been a lot of happy faces around the training ground. The supporters are happy and I think 90% of the football has been fantastic as well.

"Take away Tottenham and it's been exactly what I've been hoping for. That has made me even more desperate and hungry to get back among the lads. Yes, it's been frustrating, but it's also been nice to see lads progressing well. The signings made have been good and from top to bottom everybody at the club is smiling."
