Ghanaian security agents seized a truckload of arms and ammunition believed to be on its way to crisis-torn Nigeria and arrested five people, a senior police officer in Accra said on Wednesday.
The Tuesday seizure comes with Nigeria hit by mass protests and a national strike over soaring fuel prices as well as spiralling violence blamed on Islamist group Boko Haram.
“The vehicle with Coca Cola inscription was loaded with the consignment which included pump action guns, double-barrel guns and a large quantity of cartridges,” Accra Regional Police Commander Rose Bio Atinga told AFP.
Police, acting on a tipoff, arrested two Nigerians and three Ghanaians.
“After a check was conducted, we realise that the vehicle with a (Nigerian) registration number, was loaded with ammunition covered by a metal plate,” said Atinga.
“Upon interrogation, the suspects confessed that the consignment was on its way to Nigeria,” she said.
Ghana and Nigeria — two west African countries — are linked by road, by sea and by air.

I CAN SMELL RAT ...“Imagine a city where graffiti wasn't illegal, a city where everybody draw whatever they liked. Where every street was awash with a million colours and little phrases. Where standing at a bus stop was never boring. A city that felt like a party where everyone was invited, not just the estate agents and barons of big business. Imagine a city like that and stop leaning against the wall - it's wet.

Don't believe them. Nigeria is now a good excuse for criminal arms smugglers caught anywhere in Africa. Even Somalians can claim arms consignment seized from Al Shabab is meant for Nigeria. Nigerians know how to import their arms, whether Niger Delta or Boko Haram, they won't be that stupid to drive them all the way from Ghana.
