But two persons arrested later in the day in connection with the attack have been confirmed to be non-Nigerians. They are nationals of the Republic of Niger.
Bethany Home has been hosting orphans and less privileged children over the years, but Monday, the 100 children in the home got a raw treatment from the assailants, as they were thrown out of their home in the early hours of the day when unknown arsonists set some mattresses spread outside the home on fire, before finally setting the home ablaze.
Properties worth millions of naira were consumed by the inferno that engulfed the home at about 10am.
The home was said to have first been attacked last Wednesday from an uncompleted building beside it. The home was only saved on that day by the combined efforts of the little inmates and its staff, who struggled, albeit weakly, to fetch water and pack sand to douse the ire of the fire. They succeeded, but not until one of the rooms had been razed down by the inferno. It turned out a short-fuse success.
The assailants came again Monday, more determined and poised to carry out their incendiary mission. Not even the rays of daylight could deter them. They have been coming under the cover of the night in the five previous times they had attacked the home unsuccessfully. Last Sunday, they had woken to find that the attackers had come into the premises of the home at night, seized one of the motorcycles of one of the missionaries, and burnt it. But Monday, they became emboldened to come even in the daytime, because no effort had been made to nab them by the police in previous failed attempts.
