A Superintendent of Police serving with the Edo State Police Command has been sentenced to four years’ imprisonment for accepting a bribe of N500,000 from a suspect.

Mr. Temple Nwankwoala was arraigned before the High Court of Edo State in Benin for demanding the sum of N1m and consequently accepting N500,000 from a suspect whose case he was handling, the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) said in a statement.

ICPC’s Head Public Enlightenment, Mr. Mike Sowe said the police officer had promised to manipulate the case in favour of the suspect, who had earlier pleaded with him to accept the sum of N300,000.

He said when the suspect reported the matter to the ICPC, they set up investigation “which eventually led to the arrest of the suspect after he had received the sum of N500,000 in marked notes in the presence of ICPC operatives. The accused was subsequently arraigned on a four count charge for demanding and receiving gratification and for failure to report the offer of bribe.

“At the conclusion of the trial, the accused was discharged on counts 2 and 4 but convicted on count 1 for demanding gratification and sentenced to 4 years imprisonment; and on count 3 for failure to report the offer of gratification and sentenced to 3 years in jail. Both sentences are to run concurrently,” ICPC said.
