Abam was said to have died during a gunfight between Chinese police officers and suspected drug runners in July 2000 in Guanzou, China. Although his body was never returned to Nigeria, his friends had allegedly told his family that he was shot dead.
Subsequently his family had undertaken the traditional mourning and symbolic burial of an empty casket.
However, when Abam returned on Friday, it was gathered that he had been convicted and jailed by the Chinese authorities in 2000 for complicity in drug running. He was allegedly released on January 26.
Details are still sketchy as phone calls made to members of his family have gone unanswered, but a close family friend confirmed the development.
"We suspect it was a mistake by the Chinese people and his friends then told us he was killed," said Ifeanyi Agbasiere, a kinsman of the Abams. "And because there was no further communication from him, we all believed it and buried him. But to our shock, he just walked into the village on Friday night.
Everybody panicked and even his old mother is said to still be in shock as she is yet to talk. They are keeping him indoors so nobody really knows what happened. But the elders have called a meeting this evening and his father will be there. Maybe he was deported after they released him from prison. It is a miracle."
Police authorities in Imo State say they are unaware of the development. "I doubt this story because any deported criminal is normally handed over to Immigration authorities at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, on their return," said a senior police officer who did not want his name published.
