Against the backdrop of controlling new HIV infections and other segxwally transmitted infections, a medical expert, Professor Rasheed Bakare, has advocated the registration of all commercial sex workers in the country.

Bakare, a Professor of Clinical Microbiology at the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences, University of Ibadan,  after delivering his inaugural lecture, entitled: “Microbes and Morals, An Unlikely Love Affair” at the Trenchard Hall of the institution, stated that the approach when applied in Senegal, caused the incidence of HIV to be less than one per cent.

Professor Bakare, who acknowledged that the population of Nigeria might make such an exercise difficult, maintained that Nigeria should start somewhere, noting that, “we cannot gloss over the fact that all segxwally transmitted diseases (STDs) are real and they are there with us, we only need to be careful.”

The Clinical Microbiology expert, who said he had done a lot of work on the activities of commercial sex workers, argued that the most dangerous of the group were not the identified prostitutes living in brothels but the street sex hawkers described as amateur.

According to him, “the identified prostitutes don’t constitute health hazards to the society because of the care they undergo and the policy they make concerning their trade,” adding that, “now, that policy of no condom, no sex is not so among the street sex hawkers”.

Professor Bakare, who expressed the opinion that anybody that exchanged sex with money or even marks (in case of female students) is a “commercial sex worker,” stressing that, this group that could be regarded as amateur in the trade constituted a major hazard when it comes to the spread of any STD.

The expert counselled that abstinence remained the potent weapon against STDs, saying, “since segxwal contact is the major transmission route for HIV and other segxwally transmitted infections, eliminating segxwal contact eliminates risk of transmission by this route”.

Professor Bakare, who recalled in the lecture, highly successful individuals and public figures like Adolf Hitler and Napoleon Bonaparte who had STDs, said “venereal diseases were diseases and not crimes.”

According to him, “Venereal diseases should no longer be regarded as shameful, abhorrent evidence of an individual's degraded moral character. Indeed, there is no romance and no love affair between the segxwally transmitted infection and the victim's moral character.”
