The Joint Military Task Force acting on a tip-off arrested two vessels and its occupants carrying an estimated 650,000 tons of crude oil, in Awoba Area of Rivers State. JTF in the Niger Delta known as ``Operation Pulo Shield’’ confirmed the arrest of 21 Ghanaians and five Nigerians for crude oil theft.
The Media Coordinator of JTF, Lt.-Col. Onyema Nwachukwu, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Yenagoa on Tuesday.
He said that the suspects were on board vessels MT Ani and MT Oso with 650,000 metric tonnes of crude oil when they were arrested.
Nwachukwu said the suspects had been handed over to the Sector 2 command of the outfit for interrogation. ``JTF on Monday in an operation code named 'Operation Clean up Sombeiro River' arrested 21 international oil thieves and five Nigerians on board vessels MT Ani and MT Oso with 650,000 metric tonnes capacity of crude oil. ``The 21 non-Nigerians are Ghanaians.
``We want to reaffirm our zero tolerance to illegal bunkering and illegal refining. Such criminality will not be tolerated irrespective of who is involved.’’ He said that the two vessels, allegedly used by the culprits in siphoning the crude oil, had been impounded. (NAN)
