A moment of apparent horseplay between two police officers has left a church staff member, John Bargo, severely injured and sparked outrage over the handling of firearms by security personnel in public spaces.
The incident occurred on April 23 at the Baptist Church in the Kaura District of Abuja, where Bargo, a dedicated church worker, was awaiting the delivery of a guitar he had ordered. Witnesses say the 34-year-old was seated beside Officer Umar, who had been assigned to the church for routine protection.
Trouble began when another officer, identified as Ahmed, who was stationed across the street at a school, crossed over and allegedly began playing with Umar’s rifle.
“At first it looked like they were just joking around,” said eyewitness Beevan Magoni. “But things escalated quickly when Ahmed cocked the rifle and released the safety.”
According to multiple accounts, a brief scuffle ensued as Umar attempted to reclaim his weapon. Though he managed to retrieve it, he failed to discharge the live round that had been chambered. Minutes later, Ahmed returned and once again grabbed the rifle in what many described as a continuation of the dangerous display.
Witnesses say the muzzle was unintentionally pointed toward Bargo during the struggle. Without warning, a single shot rang out.
“The bullet went through his shin and shattered his thigh bone,” said Magoni, who helped rush the victim to the hospital.
The aftermath has sparked deep concern. Officer Ahmed reportedly fled the scene and remained missing for several days. Meanwhile, Officer Umar resumed his duties without any immediate disciplinary action, prompting anger among church members and residents.
The Baptist Church was forced to suspend ongoing projects and divert over ₦5 million to fund Bargo’s emergency surgery and treatment. While Bargo survived the shooting, he faces a prolonged and uncertain recovery.
“What’s more disturbing than the shooting is the silence that followed,” Magoni added. “We’ve seen no arrests, no suspensions, and no accountability.”
Despite the gravity of the incident, neither officer has been formally charged or publicly sanctioned. Community members and human rights advocates are now calling for an independent investigation and immediate action from the Nigeria Police Force.
The case adds to growing concerns about the professional conduct and accountability of security personnel, especially in environments meant to be safe havens like schools and places of worship.
