Operatives of the Tactical Intelligence Squad (TIS) under the Ondo State Police Command have arrested a four-man gang accused of masterminding a series of car thefts across the state, bringing relief to residents who had lived in fear of their activities.
The syndicate, headed by 32-year-old Afolabi Emmanuel, was apprehended after allegedly stealing a 2016 Toyota Camry from the home of one Mr. Amokun Victor in Oka-Akoko. According to the police, the suspects scaled the compound fence, broke into the residence, and fled with the vehicle and other valuables under the cover of darkness.
Parading the suspects before newsmen on Thursday, May 8, at the Command Headquarters in Akure, Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Afolabi, disclosed that the stolen Camry—estimated at ₦12 million—was shockingly sold for just ₦700,000 through a middleman in Ogori-Magongo, Kogi State.
"These criminals have been on our watchlist for months," Afolabi stated. "Their arrest marks a major breakthrough in our efforts to dismantle inter-state car theft syndicates."
Further investigations led to the recovery of two additional stolen vehicles, including a Toyota Sienna van valued at ₦6 million, which had already been sold for ₦4 million.
The police revealed that the gang had been operating across all 18 local government areas of Ondo State. The ringleader, Afolabi, who is based in Lagos, was said to have used family visits to Akungba Akoko as a cover to scout and identify targets before coordinating the thefts.
“These suspects have terrorized innocent citizens and profited from their losses,” the CP said. “We are determined to ensure justice is served and all remaining members of the gang are apprehended.”
CP Afolabi urged vehicle owners to adopt preventive measures such as installing pedal locks, alarm systems, and vehicle trackers to deter similar crimes. He also confirmed that police operations to track other fleeing suspects are ongoing.
The suspects are expected to face charges as investigations conclude.
