About five people were reportedly drowned around Aboru community in Oke Odo, Iyana Ipaja area of Lagos State, on Wednesday, as flood ravaged many parts of the Lagos suburb, following a heavy downpour.
The police in the state, however, confirmed that only two people were drowned and that their bodies had not been recovered as of Thursday evening.
The deceased were said to have been drowned and swept into the canal at Alabede Street Junction,at Oke Odo, on Thursday evening, immediately after the heavy downfall that lasted for more than three hours.
Two of the drowned victims have, however, been identified as a father and his daughter, who were reportedly trying to rescue each other before they were swept away by the flood.
Nigerian Tribune gathered that the unidentified father was trying to rescue his 16-year-old daughter who slipped and fell into the flood.
Two other unidentified people were also drowned in other parts of Aboru and Suberu Oje with hundreds of them displaced, as their homes were completely taken over by the flood.
A resident, who simply identified himself as Akin, stated that the rainy season had brought nothing but sorrow to the residents of Suberu Oje, Aboru, Oke Odo and many other communities in the area.
Akin claimed that the Thursday incident was not the first time that people would drown around Aboru and Oke Odo, as some people also reportedly lost their lives during the rainy season last year.
The resident, however, appealed to the Lagos State government to come to their aid and find a lasting solution to the problem of flooding in the area.
When contacted, the image maker in charge of the state police command, Ngozi Braide, confirmed the incident to the Nigerian Tribune.
