The witness informed the Nigerian Tribune that four members of the squad, including a female officer of the squad, died instantly. But the identity of the dead officers could not be confirmed by Nigerian Tribune at the time of filing this report.
The accident occurred directly in front of Nigerian Meterological Agency, state office, Samonda, on the Ojoo–Mokola road.
The space bus, with registration number LAGOS MH 266 KJA, which had five occupants, was said to be heading from Sango while the Operation Burst van, with number OB11, which just made a U-turn at the UI/Bodija junction, heading back to Sango at a high speed, veered off the road to hit the bus and a motorcycle.
The status of the rider of the motorcycle with registration number OYO KEH196 QA, could not be ascertained at the time of going to press.
The victims were taken to the emergency section at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan in a van belonging to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) with registration number RS 993 A0/1.
When the Nigerian Tribune visited the hospital, the head of the medical officers directed that the team were not in a position to give details on the victims, but an unconfirmed report had it that seven people were brought into the hospital, while two of them had died.
Scores of sympathisers were seen milling round the scene of the incident when the Nigerian Tribune got to the scene of the incident at about 10.00 a.m.
Meanwhile, a visibly shaken Oyo State governor, Senator Abiola Ajimobi, after emerging from the Emergency Ward of the hospital, said the government would foot the medical bills of those involved in the accident.
The governor, who was accompanied by the General Officer Commanding 2 Mechanised Division, Nigerian Army, Ibadan, Major-General M. D. Abubakar; the state Director of State Security Service (SSS), Mr Charles Ugwu; the state Commissioner for Health, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin; the Chief of Staff, Dr Adeolu Akande and other top government officials, said the state government was willing to offer the hospital management some form of assistance.
While at the emergency ward of the hospital to monitor the rate of recovery of one of the patients, the governor promised that government would help the hospital to procure some vital signs monitors, which the hospital staff said were in short supply.
“Though UCH is a federal health institution, because it is in Oyo State and it is for the benefit of the people of the state, we will assist you in the procurement of some of the equipment,” he said.
The governor said the security outfit lost four security operatives to the accident, adding that of the four people on admission at the hospital, two were civilians.
