President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan yesterday once again told Nigerians not to panic that he will surely defeat terrorism in the nation. He also assured that in addition to internal measures being taken by his administration to curb the menace of insecurity, government had gone into partnership with the international community to put an end to violence and general insecurity in the country.

The president, who gave the assurance at the book presentation, Overcoming Security Challenges, written by former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Sir Mike Okiro, yesterday in Abuja, commended Okiro for taking  time out from his ‘well deserved rest’ to document his experiences and strategies on how best to tackle the challenges of insecurity which had been in the front burner for sometime now.

President Jonathan, who was represented by Sylvester Monye on the occasion, said his administration was doing everything within its powers to ensure the safety of Nigerians irrespective of their tribe or religion, and foreigners living in the country.

Jonathan said: “Issues of security has been a front burner in recent times and in response to this great challenge, government has stepped up effort to ensure the safety of every Nigerian and foreigners living in our country.

“Apart from the internal measure being taken to overcome the new threat of terrorism, we are also cooperating with the international community to put an end to the mindless recourse to violence embarked upon by a misguided few who are determined to cause chaos. “I assure you that government will not rest until the negative elements are defeated,” the president said.

The security measures put in place, not withstanding, Jonathan said concerted efforts must be made by all to re-establish a peaceful co-existence and harmonious community and ethnic and religious relations between the various segments of the diverse society to live as one.

The president said: “What binds us together is our common destiny as nationals of one indivisible country and what will ensure that we remain together, is the conscious effort of individuals, organizations, cooperate bodies and public institutions to ensure peace that is based on justice and to maintain vigilance which is the price of liberty.”

Jonathan, while noting that no responsible government would disregard sound advice on security, especially when it was coming from one of its former security chiefs, said the book would go a long way in tackling some of the security challenges currently facing the country and assured that Okiro’s book would be carefully studied with a view to complementing key government efforts at ensuring that the country was more secured.

He said the book, Overcoming security challenges, was a true life experiences of the former inspector general of police who had taken time to outlines practical steps to tackle the security challenge for the benefit of the generality of Nigerians. While commending the former police boss for adding to the library of knowledge in security issues, the president said Okiro had distinguished himself both as a researcher and a writer.

“No responsible government will disregard sound advice on security particularly when such counsel comes from one of its former security chiefs. “It is in this regard that Sir Okiro’s book would be studied with a view to complementing key government effort in ensuring that the country is more secure. Cognizant of the complex nature of security, I again express my personal gratitude to the writer.

“I have no doubt that the book will enrich the reader and that it will play a significant role in tackling some of the security challenges currently facing our nation. I therefore recommend the book to all. Earlier in his address, the former IGP said having served in the police for 32 years, he had the opportunity to investigate all manner of crime and engaged in many anti-crime operations. During those years, he said he was able to decipher the psychology of criminals, why they reasoned the way they do and the factors that motivated them to commit crime.

According to him, “after my retirement as IGP in 2009, having attained the age of 60, I thought within myself that some of my wealth of experience right from my days as crime officer to when I bowed out must not be wasted and that I could bequeath it to the society as my noble contribution to save lives and property.” Over N60 million was realized at the book presentation.

Roll Eyes Roll Eyes I'll believe it when I see it. Politicians seem to support ecology, judging by the way they recycle their speeches.
