The Yoruba Council of Elders have  expressed concern over the worsening insecurity in the northern parts of the country.

During the General Assembly of the council  in Ado-Ekiti on Tuesday, they asked the Federal Government to fashion out a way of ending the crisis.

The council, in a communique by its President, Gen. Adeyinka Adebayo; Secretary General, Chief Idowu Sofola (SAN); and the National Publicity Secretary, Chief Oluyemi Falade, said the crisis in the North had led to a colossal loss of lives and property.

The communique read in part, “Igbimo Agba Yoruba is very much disturbed about the security situation in this country particularly in the Northern part of Nigeria, leading to wanton destruction of lives and property resulting from insurgencies.

“Igbimo Agba Yoruba hereby reiterates that the unity of the nation is paramount and, in particular, in Yoruba nation.”

The YCE, which urged the FG to repair Ibadan-Ogbomoso to Ilorin, Lagos-Ibadan Expressway and other federal roads in the South-West lamented lopsided federal appointments, which they said did not favour Yoruba.

The group also advocated diversification of the nation’s economy while urging that priority should be given to agriculture.

Governor Kayode Fayemi, who was represented by his deputy, Mrs. Funmi Olayinka, advised the Yoruba nation to be vigilant and use their native intelligence to ward off insurgents from the area.

He urged Yoruba people to begin to speak with one voice, saying those at the centre had neglected them because the people were no longer speaking as one nation.

He said, “This  is not what history tells us about the Yoruba. And because our voices are  different  and divided, we became pawns in Nigeria’s political chess game. The effect of this is seen in comatose infrastructural facilities,  which identification is decadence in the entire region.

“Failed road network, lopsided appointments skewed against the South- West and other unwarranted  short–changing ironically for a people that is articulate, enlightened and socially alert.”
