Jos crisis: Lawyer slams N1 billion suit against FG

A group of lawyers in Jos have sued the federal government, demanding the sum of one billion naira as compensation for unlawful arrest, torture, and detention against residents of the north central city of Jos.

The applicants seeking to enforce their fundamental rights are asking the court for the following reliefs.

“An order against the respondents jointly and severally to pay the applicants the sum of one billion naira only as compensation for unlawful arrest, torture, detention, embarrassment, pains and inconveniences coursed to the applicants by the respondents”

“an order directing the 1st to 4th respondents to surrender the 5th respondent and all other military officers that participated in the assault, embarrassment and torture of the applicants on the 18th July, 2012 for trail by court martial under section 104 of the armed forces act cap.a20 laws of the federation of Nigeria 2004”

The lawyers claimed that the members of the special task force attached to Gyel community had toured citizens of the community leading to the death of three people.

Those joined as respondents include Federal Government of Nigeria, Attorney General of the Federation, Chief of Defence Staff and the Special Task Force in Plateau state, Major General Henry Ayola as 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th respondents respectively.
