In commemoration of Liberia’s 165th Independence, the President, Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, has issued a proclamation declaring the national observation of the festive occasion in Monrovia, the capital city of Liberia, under the theme: “Transformation for Building of a Legacy of Development and Democracy.”

Liberia, the oldest independent African Republic, has embarked on an irreversible path of socio-economic and democratic transformation, following a devastating civil war between 1989 and 2003.   The country has had two successive post-war elections in 2005 and 2011.

A statement made available to LEADERSHIP yesterday by Liberia’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Prof. Al-Hassan Conteh, noted Mrs. Ellen Johnson Sirleaf was democratically elected the first female President in Africa in Liberia’s 2005 elections initiating an era of transformative national renewal for recovery and prosperity.
