Just as the dust was settling on the 3rd round fixtures in the Capital One Cup, the 4th round draw was conducted, with the blockbuster tie between Chelsea and Manchester United the highlight. United will travel to Stamford Bridge in the 4th round, with Sir Alex Ferguson sure to bemoan the stream of Premier League opponents his side generally draw in cup competitions. The game could lose some of its shine as United and Chelsea face-off in the league a couple of days before the schedule 4th round tie.

The draw also threw up another spicy encounter as defending champions Liverpool are handed a home tie against Swansea, a club which was run by current Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers less than five months ago. Arsenal have been handed a trip to the Royal county as they have drawn Reading and their local rivals Tottenham Hotspur also face a away trip as they play Norwich City.

There four teams from outside the top division still remaining in the competition and all four have drawn Premier League sides in the next round. The stand-out fixture is undoubtedly the North-East derby between Sunderland and Middlesbrough while giant-killers Leeds United host Southampton. Finally, Aston Villa travel to Paolo Di Canio’s Swindon Town and Wigan welcome Bradford.

Chelsea and United have squared off in the League Cup previously, once in 2005 when Jose Mourinho fashioned a 2-1 aggregate victory in the semi-finals while United won their first clash in 2002. With the two sides meeting in a high-profile Premier League game days before the cup tie, we can expect the kids to turn out once again.

Meanwhile, Brendan Rodgers will by the cynosure in Liverpool’s clash with Swansea as the manager’s exploits with the Welsh team are still fresh in the memory of the fans. Liverpool have been very poor in the league, but they continue to be a good cup side and like last season, the League Cup represents a realistic trophy target for the Reds.

Chelsea v Manchester United
Reading v Arsenal
Liverpool v Swansea City
Norwich City v Tottenham Hotspur
