A Texas 5-year-old shot his older brother with a rusty rifle as they played in the bath, police said.

The youngster accidentally fired a bullet from the .22 caliber weapon into his 7-year-old sibling’s lower back 9 p.m. Tuesday at their Houston home.

Gwen Carter of Child Protective Services says, ‘If you have weapons — guns, knives, anything that a child can hurt themselves with or hurt someone else — put them in a place where a child can’t get to them.’



The victim was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital for treatment. Sources said he is making a steady recovery, and is “awake, alert and talking.”

It is unclear how the younger boy, who has temporarily been sent to stay with his uncle, obtained and fired the weapon.
