Why is that Nigerians raised in America looked down upon by Nigerians who were actually raised in Nigeria??
This question is actually about me. I was raised here in America (I have been here since I was 5yrs old) been back to Nigeria twice, understand Ibo but don't speak it well. But alot of Nigerians do not consider me Nigerian which real bothers me.
Now why would Nigerians not consider me Nigerian?

I am not snobish; I'm judged b/4 they get to know. But I do have lots of Nigerian friends but they tell me that I'm not Nigerian....not in a mean way though....is hard to take that they don't see me as Nigerian...When I first met Nigerians the converstion is usually this....and then they get to know me.

i guess i'm in the same boat as you. But mine is actually from being around akatas and white ppl..lmao..see i've never been back to naija, but it bother's me when ppl think i'm not nigerian because i don't understand or speak pigin very well. (i was actually told this here at the confessions)..but what some ppl have to understand is, Its very hard trying to keep up with your culture and heritage, especially when you live in a place where there isn't Nigerians around and you end up hanging around americans, what do you think will happen?..I'm glad i still speak and write igbo, though it sucks sometimes..but atleast i try my best to keep up with things. I'm not snubbish at all, i treat everyone as humans..not by heritage or whatever. And the stupidest thing about it is, they tend to say that you're not nigerian when it comes to things that doesn't make sense..just because i told someone that My chicken wasn't cut on my salad..and that i didn't feel like fixing my own food at a party..they looked at me and said(you are so not nigerian)..what tha hell is that suppose to mean?

Even Jesus christ wasnt loved by everyone, stick to the people who appreciate you for who you are, the rest should jump off the 3rd Mainland Bridge. I'm lucky, I only left when I had learnt igbo language well and can burst pidgin like crazy.

I'm re-learning ibo. I understand Ibo very well but I can't speak it fluently. I have been here since I was 5yrs so I lost alot. My parents speak Ibo to me and I reply them back in English but I re-learning and will be speaking it soon...

Engli-igbo happens with me all the time..though i try not to do it, but at times you forget what somethings are called in igbo, and thats when the english part comes in. I'm very proud of myself though cuz i'm doing very well with it.

I guess the reason Nigerians don't consider you a Nigerian is because you are probably soooooooo Americanized. Most Nigerian men like women they can control and treat wrongly so, when they come across a woman like you who wouldn't take water from them then they tend to regard you as non Nigerian. Also there are certain things the Nigerian culture does not permit which is typically normal in the US.

That's true..I noticed that. But you would think that a man wants a woman of his equal and not someone who he can just control. My mother raised me to be able to stand up for myself (and not to depend on a man); however this is very different from how my mom is to my dad. I still follow some Nigerian traditions (culture) but being raised in America, I couldn't help but incorporate American culture within. But I don't believe it makes me any less Nigerian. And when I see Nigerian woman and woman doing something I don't like, I don't say anything unless it affects me.
