A man killed himself and his family in Vihiga county yesterday morning. Gerishom Aluda, 35, locked himself, his wife and three children inside their grass-thatched house in Vindizi village, Maragoli and set it on fire. One child who was sleeping in the sitting room escaped. The children who perished in the fire were two girls and one boy aged between one and seven years.The bodies were taken to Vihiga District Hospital mortuary.
Vihiga police boss Alfred Angengo said initial investigations indicate that Aluda had killed his wife before setting the children and himself on fire. He said Aluda who works in Kakamega arrived home on Saturday evening and asked if the family had any paraffin. Angengo said Aluda then went to the nearby shopping centre and bought five litres of petrol which he hid in the house.
“The man took two of his children to the bedroom after killing their mother and set the house on fire. The bodies we recovered were burnt beyond recognition,” Angengo said. He said Aluda tried to escape from the burning house but was overpowered by raging flames near the door.
