The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Senator Bala Mohammed has told staff of the administration that there will be no payment of salary bonus to them this year.
Reacting to demands by staff of the administration who embarked on a protest at the administration’s secretariat on Monday, he noted that his administration introduced the incentive popularly called 13th month in 2011, pointing out that it could no longer continue with the payment as the debt burden on the administration had made it difficult to go on with such a tradition. He said one could not be indebted and at the same time be doling out largesse.
A statement by the minister’s press secretary, Muhammad Sule, quoted the minister as assuring the union during a meeting he had with its leaders that the administration would embark on recruitment exercise after it is done with the biometric and promotion exercises next year. He said the conclusion of the biometric and promotion exercises in the first quarter of 2014, would throw up vacancies that would immediately be filled through the new recruitment to maintain the chain in the service.
The statement also quoted the minister as promising that the administration through its mandate secretariat would establish a durable and functional transport system for staff to ameliorate their transport problems especially for those at the lower cadre and emphasising that such transportation system would be paid for because of the existing policy of monetisation for public servants.
