BEHOLD, UNILAG PRODUCES YOUNGEST MEDICAL DOCTOR - SHE'S A MUSLIM
- If you think boko is haram, then you're wrong!

A 21 year-old student, Miss Maryam Opeyemi Raji has emerged the youngest graduating medical student at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos, during 2012/13 academic session.

The graduand, a devout muslim and member of the Muslim Students' Society of Nigeria, Lagos State Area Unit, was very excited about the feat, saying "It's a favour from Allah that I would be the youngest."

Parents, family and friends gathered on Wednesday, June 11, 2014 to celebrate her success story. It was a time for merriment, and obviously, she deserved the reception she got, having spent the last six years of hardwork at the College of Medicine.

In a chat with AL-FAHM, Miss Raji thanked Almighty Allah for the successful completion of her degree, noting that being the youngest graduating medical student is a dream come true.

According to her, "It's my dad's dream I become a medical doctor. Unfortunately I lost him at age 8. People around me, especially my mum, nurtured the dream. She helped me keep the goal, it was very challenging but having her around kept me focused. Luckily for me, I finished my secondary education at an early age, and at 15, I gained admission to study medicine at the University of Lagos. Here I am today, I am being celebrated as the youngest medical student."

Fondly called A-raji (omo mama) by friends, the former Editor-in-Chief, MSSN, CMUL/LUTH branch revealed the secret of her success story.

She said, "The fact that I am a muslim is the first gift. As a muslim, I didn't engage in acts forbidden by Allah. Acts like drinking alcohol, clubbing, partying, and engaging in unlawful relationship, among others. Also, my secondary school, Vanguards Academy was a training ground for me. It groomed me to become what I am today.

"I don't miss classes, except when it clashed with obligatory act of my deen (Islam). I know the right time to read and I will understand whatever I read through Allah's mercies. This was made possible through the Memorisation of the Qur'an. It makes me to remember a lot of things I have read. These are my secret of success story."

While dedicating her achievement to Almighty Allah and her late dad, she enjoined muslim women not to relent in seeking for knowledge.

"Seeking for knowledge is compulsory upon all Muslims, irrespective of gender. There is no religion that talks about the importance of knowledge other than Islam. Early Muslims led the world because of their disposition to knowledge. There is nothing like western education, what we know today as western education has its origin from Islam. When I was in school, I extracted interesting quotes about knowledge and posted it in my room, to educate and inspire people."

Interestingly, the second youngest graduating medical student is also a muslim. She's Miss Aisha AbdurRazaq, born in January 1993, same year with Miss Maryam Raji, but 4 month older. They are both 21.

Meanwhile, Mrs Ruqayyah Arogundade-Odumoso and Miss Balqees Oyemala were among hundreds of Muslim students that completed different programmes at the prestigious University during the just concluded 54th Convocation ceremony.

The graduands have not only made their families proud, the entire muslim ummah (muslim community) is also happy about their successes. We want more of you (sisters), keep representing ISLAM.
