PANIC has spread around the Lagos State capital Ikeja as the funeral of the traditional ruler the Olu of Ikeja looms and local tradition requires that seven human heads are buried along with the remains of the oba to serve him in the afterlife. Yesterday, Oba Rauf Adeniyi Aremu Matemi, the Olu of Ikeja passed away in his palace after a brief illness and plans for his funeral are currently being put together. All businesses and shops in Ikeja Local Government Area were closed down yesterday as a mark of respect for the departed monarch. At the oba’s palace yesterday, traditional figures, market women and members of the Hausa community were all present to pay their respects. Some rituals were also being performed in his honour at the palace, with some traditional chiefs wearing the traditional white wrappers as demanded by custom. One senior chief said: “There are some rituals that needed to be performed when an oba dies. For instance, we don’t announce the death of a king on the pages of newspapers.” Human rights bodies have however, warned local Ikeja residents to be wary of their movements, especially at night. Those considered most vulnerable are people living in the Anifowose, Obafemi Awolowo Way, Alausa, Mobolaji Bank Anthony Way, Ipodo, Computer Village, Oba Akran and Ikeja GRA areas. Among other things, the traditional Oro cult will be coming out every night to pay homage until the monarch is buried. Residents are being advised to get back home early and stay indoors if they live in these vicinities.

If that is what culture or tradition demands it means even in an urban area like ikeja, living being can be killed for a dead king.thats barbaric and meaningless. i pray their family member to be the victims

Make them go use abandoned body in their mortuary or dig out seven already buried heads, they don't need to kill anybody to get seven human heads, Mumu people.

BARBARIC!!!, how could they think of such inhuman act, is the so called Oba more than African greatest man (NELSON MANDELA) and other well meaning figures who passed on, my judgment : his generations should bury themselves with him so that the barbaric tradition can end there or better still, they should bury him just like every normal dead person so as to erase this inhuman and barbaric tradition. nonsense!

Life is about making codes of conduct, ethics and values which over a long period forms the culture and tradition of a people.Since life is a process of learning, the culture and tradition of a people should be reviewed from time to time in the long process of learning. Some traditions that were relevant to our forefathers may not be relevant to modern men now, such traditions should therefore be expunged.Men and Women in the Society were not made for the purpose of tradition, rather Tradition was made for the purpose of Men and Women in the Society,so any tradition that is no longer relevant should be discarded. This Oba will be buried without any human head......civilization and modernization have overtaken that barbaric tradition.
