Big Celebrations: Wole Soyinka Clocks 80 Tomorrow

Professor Wole Soyinka , the renowned professor of literature, an accomplished academic,playwright , poet, novelist, social critic, political activist and Nobel Laureate will turn 80 on Sunday, July 13, 2014.

His academic brilliance, his courage, his forthrightness, his concern for the society in which he lives and his sometimes acerbic criticism of authority have all become part of the living legend of our time.

Wole Soyinka is a man of great conviction and, who, having won the Nobel Prize for Literature, has become a universally acclaimed giant.

The Nobel Prize for Literature like every other Nobel Prize marks the highest point of excellence in any chosen field of endeavour.

The prize is a salute to creativity and it designates the recipient as a giant in our civilization.

Government of Ogun state stressed the need to celebrate with him and that it would continue to support projects that would project the image of the Nobel Laureate.

The State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, made the pledge at a press conference held in Abeokuta, the state
capital, in preparation for the 80th birthday anniversary of the literary icon.

Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc (STI) has also endorsed the prize money for 80th birthday essay competition instituted in honour of the Nobel Laureate; Professor Wole Soyinka, tagged “Project WS.”

The pan Nigerian secondary school essay competition is a cultural exchange programme and participating students in Nigeria and the Diaspora are expected to their submit entries on topics chosen by the organisers.

The number of selected finalists usually tally with the age of the Nobel laureate and the topic for the 2014 contest is entitled “Path to Freedom and the Future.”
