Former second vice President of the Nigeria Football Federation, Rumson Baribote has said he persuaded his wife to withdraw the suit she filed against the NFF at a Jos High Court because he felt the country’s interest should come first before his personal consideration.

The landmark case was withdrawn following several meetings between the aggrieved wife of the former NFF chieftain, Mrs Ebiakpo Rumson Baribote who is the plaintiff and the Sports Minister, Tammy Danagogo on the one hand and President Goodluck Jonathan and the Minister on the other.

The Minister also consulted several interest groups in order to have the case withdrawn to avert further FIFA sanctions.

After several hiccups in the determination of the motion on notice by Justice P.L. Lot, the case was finally vacated on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 beating the FIFA deadline of July 17, and the development has been communicated to FIFA by returning NFF General Secretary, Musa Amadu.

And Victor Baribote has explained why the case had to be vacated: “I pleaded with my wife (Ebiakpo Baribote – plaintiff), to vacate the case after due consideration and in the interest of the country.

“We decided on that, having seen what the country’s football has been through since the court injunction. We also considered the U20 women team, so they can travel for the FIFA U20 Women’s world cup in Canada.

“Also having discussed with the sports minister, my wife decided it was the right thing to do, in the interest of the country. Despite the victimization I suffered at the hands of the NFF, the interest of Nigeria should come first,” Baribote said.

The case was vacated before the close of work on Wednesday, despite the industrial strike action on state high courts in the country. It means the Aminu Maigari-led NFF board and congress have been reinstated following the vacation of the court process.
