All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd) is to fund his campaign from donations from Nigeria. Buhari told reporters at a news conference yesterday in Abuja that he would not, like President Goodluck Jonathan who held a fund raiser where he realised over N21 billion, gathered people to raise money for his campaign.
At the press briefing to appraise the public with how far the Buhari Crowd Funding Project has gone, he stated that every kobo in the account must be signed out by him. On the account, which donation has grown to N54, 415, 386. 70, he said: “l will be the only signatory to the account.” He also denied the allegation that he had paid back the N27.5 million loan he took to buy the presidential nomination form from the proceeds of the Crowd Funding Project. According to him, the issue of the N27.5 million he paid for his nomination form is between him and the manager of his bank. He also stated that he was misrepresented on how he sourced the N27.5 million to buy the presidential nomination form.
He added that he only said he tried to influence the leadership of the party to reduce the amount just as they did to other aspirants of other political offices and when they did not, he called his bank to raise the money. “l put a call to my bank and said whatever the state of my account, they should honour the cheque and that was what my bank did. So people just formulated stories from there and so on.So what happened was between me and my manager,” he said. Asked how he was going to raise money to match the N21 billion presidential campaign funds raised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), he said: “My strengthen mainly is the ordinary people. N100 is plenty of money for them; but l know they would make the sacrifice, especially when l said l am going to sign the cheque even to the last kobo of it. That is why l am depending on them and we are taking the model of the United States when Obama came out to contest and he did not rely on the big companies but on the foot soldiers and that was what made him independent and not a stooge to anybody and this is what l want to achieve”.
Given account of the Crowd Funding Project that was launched in November, Buhari said: “Currently, 82 support groups have been registered under the Buhari Support Organisations (BSO) with over 475, 796 coordinators and total membership in the region of 8, 492, 226 across the length and breadth of this country.

“We intend to use the registration and donation cards to enlist the members of the groups as volunteer change agents and also capture the spatial distribution of our donors. “So far so good, we have received donation of N54, 415, 386.70 through direct deposit and sales of cards to the account. “Let me reiterate that the only authorised account designated for the crowd funding, which I am the sole signatory to, is the BSO account with First Bank. “I know we live in a difficult time in Nigeria. There is insecurity, corruption, poverty and above all, the uncertainty of life as it is becoming unbearable. I want to appeal to all our supporters to continue making sacrifices till we get the needed change. It is a real demonstration that when people come together and put their minds to it, change is possible.”

This should have be an easy win for buhari if not for his threats, tribal and religious comment made by him. Personally his a better candidate but will he go ahead with his religious plans?
