Election Monitoring Group, under the aegis of International Organisation for Sustainable Development, has said though it supports the postponement of the general elections in the country, the May 29 handover date must remain sacrosanct.
Head of Mission of International Organisation for Sustainable Development, Mr. Timothy Ihenmadu, who stated this at a press conference in Enugu at the weekend, said no nation would go into an election under a war situation or the majority of its citizens disenfranchised.
He urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to retrieve the permanent voters’ cards (PVCs) collected by political stakeholders and monarchs for onward distribution to the voters.
The traditional rulers and politicians, he said, could give the PVCs to their cronies if not collected from them, thereby disenfranchising the owners of the cards.
Ihenmadu said though the postponement had generated a lot of reactions, the development would help INEC to tidy up some issues, including the non-collection of PVCs, and for the security agencies to tackle insecurity, especially in the North-East.
He commended the office of the National Security Adviser for raising the alarm that there was need for the postponement of the elections because of adverse security reports.
Advising Nigerians not to cry over the shift, but to encourage INEC to use the opportunity to address the observed challenges, he advocated good welfare package for security personnel that would be on duty on the election days, saying it would help them to concentrate and carry out their responsibilities instead of going off duty in search of food.
Ihenmadu also advised INEC to appeal to the Inspector General of Police to organize special training for its staff that would be deployed to the restive areas.
