A 22-year-old Engineering student of the Delta State Polytechnic, Otefe, Bakpo Otueme, has drowned in a swimming mishap.
Otueme’s corpse was discovered floating on the River Ethiope in Oghara, Delta State, at the weekend, three days after he left home. According to the testimony of a young man who identified himself as Oghenetega, Otueme death was a swimming tragedy. Oghenetega said he had gone to the river with the deceased and another friend to wash clothes after which decided to take a swim. "After we finished washing the clothes, we decided to have some fun in the river for about 30 minutes,” he said.
He said the student, who showed visible difficulties moving in the water, having to cling to a log for support, refused to get out of the water despite his entreaties.
Unfortunately, a turbulent wave swept him into a deep part of the river where he lost his grip of the log.
Oghenetega said their attempts to rescue him failed. He said they returned home without telling anyone of the tragedy because of fear that he might have died or was just playing a prank and admitted that his decision to say the truth was influenced by pressure from the deceased's family.
