A man who claimed to be a staff of the University of Lagos has been arrested and charged before Isolo Magistrates’ court for allegedly defrauding an admission seeker under false presence of securing for the victim a post graduate admission in the school in Lagos State, western Nigeria. The suspect, Gbeminiyi Oke, allegedly collected N200,000 from Reginald Mbanusi under the false pretence of registering him in post graduate diploma in Economics in the school. Oke’s journey to prison started after he convinced Mbanusi that he was a staff of Unilag and he was entitled to a slot in the admission exercise every academic year. Mbanusi had expressed his frustration to get admission for post graduate studies and Oke promised to assist him and asked him to pay N200,000 to facilitate the admission, which he did. Oke reportedly collected his documents and promised to process the admission. Despite paying the money and promises made by Oke, no admission was given to Mabnusi. The victim requested for the refund of his money and Oke told him the money was paid for his admission but he could not get a refund because he was not qualified to be admitted. The matter was reported to the police at Area ‘D’ Command Mushin and Oke was arrested and taken to the command. Reporters gathered that the police made every effort for Oke to refund the money which failed. Oke was charged to court with criminal dishonesty and stealing under the Criminal Code. He pleaded not guilty and the presiding Magistrate, Mrs O.A. Adebayo granted him bail in the sum of N100,000 with one surety in like sum Oke was remanded in prison custody at Kirikiri pending the perfection of bail his condition.

It is only in Nigeria that one pays to get admission for studies. In countries that value human capital, nobody gives bribe to gain admission; even some countries give bonuses and grands to lure and encourage citizens to go to school or retrain for tomorrow's job market. It could also mean he was not qualified to do the postgraduate studies. What a country we have, I feel like crying right now. Which way Nigeria?
