Traffic congestion is a huge problem in Lagos.  Commuting can be really frustrating if you are not pre-informed about the traffic waves in this city. Getting to work is more tedious, you will miss interviews/ appointments/ social events and you will eventually end up stressed.

Also, traffic congestion produces air pollution which causes serious breathing problems for the commuters especially kids and the elderly. During traffic jams, your vehicle is burns up more gas resulting to you spending extra cash to re-fill your tank.
Here are few simple things you can do to avoid traffic congestion in Lagos:

1. Plan your routes

Do not leave your house or office without a plan. You need to plan out where to go and when to arrive there. This would help you determine the best routes to your destination.

2. Try leaving earlier to avoid peak times.

There are certain times of the day when more vehicles are on the roads, usually people heading to work or school in the mornings and people heading home in the evenings. In Lagos, this is also known as rush hour traffic.

This is the most important step you can take to avoid traffic congestion on the busy streets of Lasgidi. This gives you a buffer for whatever eventualities that may come up along the way.

Try to schedule trips to the bank and errands such as the grocery shopping during afternoon hours — before or after the lunch rush — and later in the evenings after workers get home.

3. Carpooling
Carpooling is another good way to lessen traffic congestion, as it means fewer cars on the road at a given time. Plus having someone to talk to will help make the drive seem even shorter. Carpooling is a great way to get to and from work.

You won’t always have to drive, which reduces stress, and each person can take turns driving. This saves on the wear-and-tear to your vehicle and car maintenance costs. Carpooling also promotes better traffic flow and less air emissions in the environment.

Take an alternate mode of transportation during rush hour, such as a bicycle or bus! Although that might mean more riders on the bus at that time, you still won’t have to wait as long as you might while sitting on the road with all of the other drivers snaking their way home.

4. Try alternative routes: It pays to know and master all the alternative routes in and out of wherever you are going to.

5. Keep your eyes on the road

Lagosians can stare! When there’s an accident or a breakdown on the side of the road, stopping (or slowing down) to take a look is the worst thing you can do. Do not gawk at accident scenes. No matter how much you might want to see carnage, twisted metal, and broken bodies, resist the urge. This will keep yourself, and everyone else behind you, moving.

6. Check traffic reports before you leave: Traffic updates are available on Traffic Lite; an android app that helps you get accurate and reliable traffic status on roads and routes you use often.
