Melbourne has been ranked the world’s most liveable city for the sixth year running, following a survey conducted by the intelligence unit of the Economist.
Referred to as Australia’s ‘Cultural Capital’, Melbourne beat Vienna (Austria) to the prestigious award, while Vancouver sits at third place. Toronto (Canada) is fourth, while Adelaide (Australia) and Calgary (Canada) tied for fifth place. Landmark harbour in Melbourne Since overtaking Vancouver as the number one city in the world in 2011, Melbourne has maintained its exceptional levels of Human Development Index (HDI) and it continues to grow in global esteem, Guardian writes. Consequently, it is adjudged the best city in the world in terms of security, friendliness, culture/environment, education, infrastructure and quality of life/living. Bird’s eye view of the coastal city Curiously, the top 10 list is dominated by cities in Australia and Canada, wealthy mid-sized countries with relatively low population densities whereas the least liveable cities were characterized by conflict and strife.
According to the Economists survey, the five least liveable cities were Damascus (Syria) followed by Tripoli (Libya) Lagos (Nigeria) Dhaka (Bangladesh) and Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea). It may come as a big surprise to some that Nigeria’s commercial capital falls within the wrong bracket on the list. But with a population density of 14,469 people per square km, compared to 3.1 and 3.9 for cities in Australia and Canada respectively, it doesn’t really come as a surprise. Also, a largely inefficient transportation system, crippling power supply and infrastructural/recreational inadequacies haven’t done Eko a lot of good. Nigerians can show demself,how could u expect any city in nigeria to be among the best in the world,no stable power supply,security is nothing to write good about,roads & transportations is messed up, health institutions are least,education is voi vittu, economy is now move from goodluck jonathan to badluck buhari, tell me one thing we can boast of,only wat we can boast of is having many children like duck without given them education,from there u see kidnappers,armed robbers,prostitutes,cultists,thugs so on and so forth,even as a nigerian living abroad,going to ur own country you will be scare of attack.
