Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Mr. Babatunde Fowler, has said that Nigerians might begin to show evidence of tax payment before they can obtain their international passports.
He was speaking on Monday, at the 136th meeting of the Joint Tax Board, which had the theme: “Increased Inter-Agency Co-operation to Enhance Tax Compliance and Optimise Revenue Collection”, in Abuja.
“We did take a position and I believe it would be implemented in the very near future that before you get any services from the immigration department: renewal of passports etc, you’d have to show that you are a tax payer.
“These things are normal all over the world, In an effort to serve Nigerians and Nigeria better.
“People believe that payment of tax is a burden and I’ll repeat that you only pay tax on income and profits.
“So if you reside in Nigeria and you are benefiting from being a Nigerian resident, it is only fair that you contribute to the system that makes you enjoy that standard of living”, he said.
Fowler also revealed that the FIRS had set a target to increase the individual taxpayer database by 10 million by December 31, 2016.
“I’m glad with our co-operation; we’ve been able to attain 30 per cent of that. We’ve been able to get three million individual taxpayers across the nation.
“I’d like to congratulate Kano State for leading the pack by increasing the database by 944,000 followed by Lagos with 306,000 then Kaduna and Plateau”, he added.

This guy no get any sense at all his talking about what order countries are doing only in terms of citizens paying to government what can government boost of since 1960 they took over from the white nothing no water, no power, no good road and no good health center....etc. Stop asking them more money when you can't even provide job that can take care of your citizens we are tired of old men moving our beloved country backward.....Please look well and see how order countries are taking good care of their citizens.

Not his fault, l see him so useless. His family never paid tax when they are abroad. So if they have done that then how would he have the opportunity to travel. Selfish idea. People are looking for better life when he was there stealing right from Lagos State ministry, stealing and sleeping with staff right from Chartered Bank. And because he has the opportunity now he is proposing what is going to benefit his family again. Then for that poor masses would be tunning to go for fake tax from company own by them ABC, so they can enrish themself again. I think there pocket is lean. OLE. Anyway it is proposal.l think now l can see Buhari given rise to the miscrant in the economic. No be im fault. Tunde OLE

Even if we should pay the proposed tax, I know this fowler will steal and send the money to his family abroad rather than using the money to better the citizens. He should use the ones we've paid to do smtin good that will motivate us to pay more.

Did your childrel and your wife pay tax or show prove of tax payment before given visa to run away from the country which you people have made hell fire? He is not a politician but an opportunist. Tinubu brought him up for etax in Lagos state. They jointly run Alpha Beta Company that collect and do tax card for 9ja. He is a thief right from Chartered Bank and he also help Akingbola the enstrange banker of intercontinental to steal customers money. He was given appointment by Tinubu and that is where he felt he has the monopoly of power to talk when he is in federal tax office revenue now. I dont know why Buhari still keep him at that parastatal. He is a pure thief.
