Army denies distributing condoms to soldiers.

Military authorities in Jos, Plateau State, have disputed a claim by a non-governmental organisation, Volunteers for Sustainable Development, that it distributed not less 10,000 packets of condoms, monthly, to the military Special Task Force personnel charged with ensuring security in Jos.



Director of the NGO, Mr. Zanna Umar, was quoted to have said that the group was hitherto giving 7,000 condoms to the soldiers after the 2008 crisis, but that that figure had been increased to 10,000 since the 2010 sectarian crisis broke out in Jos.



Spokesman of the Military, Lt. Col Kayode Ogundele, told our correspondent in an interview, in Jos, on Sunday, that the NGO had never distributed even one condom to any soldier attached to STF.



He also said the NGO had never approached the military for such exercise, adding that the NGO might have been on a mischievous mission to get more money from their sponsors.



Ogundele challenged the NGO to produce any evidence that it gave condoms to the STF personnel.
