The player's failure to break into the first-team saw manager Owen Coyle giving the defender his blessing to hunt for a new employer.
It had then been thought that Turkish club Kayserispor were offering a lucrative deal to lure him into their ranks, but the former QPR man rejected the chance to make a switch to the Kadir Has Stadium.
A statement on Bolton's official website reads: "Bolton Wanderers have reached an agreement with Danny Shittu to release the defender from his contract at the club with immediate effect.
"The Nigerian international joined the Whites from Watford in August 2008 and made a total 12 appearances during his stay at the Reebok Stadium.
