PRESIDENT Goodluck Jonathan has said the government will do all that is necessary to ensure the erratic power supply in the country is brought to an end.
He said this while inaugurating the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), at the State House, Abuja, on Wednesday.
Also, the president said the current Multi-Year Tariff Order (MYTO) will be reviewed to ensure a sustainable foundation for the power sector.
The current MYTO was introduced in 2008 by the late President Umaru Yar’Ádua, with the aim of attracting investors to develop the sector.
President Jonathan, at the inauguration, reiterated that government had begun the process of liquidating the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN); full commercialisation of various companies established to succeed PHCN; the establishment of a lifeline tariff specifically for the urban and rural dwellers and the constitution of a power consumer assistance fund.
He said the fund would provide the system through which the lifeline tariffs would be administered, adding that with continued focus, the government would achieve its desired goals in the power sector.
“We are most optimistic and expectant that with continued focus, this government will achieve its desired goals in laying a solid and sustainable foundation for a viable power sector,” he said.
