Guinness Record: Ekiti Govt Issues Prohibition Against Kiss-A-Thon Race

The Ekiti State Government on Wednesday prohibited a planned hosting of ‘Kiss-A-Thon’ in the state.

The Permanent Secretary, State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism, Mr Dele Ogunsemoyin in a letter to the state Hoteliers Association which was signed by the Director of Tourism Development, Adebanji Adelusi stated that the ministry has at its disposal information on kiss-a-thon, about a 3- day kissing marathon event scheduled to hold on Friday, July 7, 2023, at one of the hospitality outlets in the State.

According to the letter, “This event is said to be planned towards setting a Guinness World Record.

“Kiss-a-thon” as an event is not only absurd, unhealthy, immoral and capable of denigrating the image of the state, it is a programme that runs counter to the values of the people of the state and therefore capable of plunging our Youths morally backwards.

“In view of the foregoing, the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Tourism hereby prohibits the hosting of such event or any other events like it in any facility that wishes to continue to operate lawfully in Ekiti State.

“To the above, you are hereby requested to convey the content of this Notice to the members of Ekiti State Hoteliers’ Association to effectively monitor their outlets against being used negatively to cause embarrassment to the Government and People of Ekiti State.”.

In as much as I find all these A-thon GWR things ridiculous at this point, I want to point out that the Government has no right to stop anyone from doing whatever they wish to do as long as they are not breaking any existing laws of the federation. If na boy to kiss boy or vice versa, kill them, but if it is a hetero event, then, they have no such right to stop them. All this holier than thou attitude in Nigeria should stop. The person that wrote that Notice may be someone that just signed off millions of the peoples money today, while those masses die in abject poverty, but he wants to stop another persons hustle. Nigeria should seriously look into changing some of our laws since they are no longer freely applicable. How can you tell me that I have freedom of religion, association, speech and so on, then you also try to force me to stop what I want to do with those freedoms?

We are where we are in Nigeria today because of the lack of the rule of law. There is an existing law, let everyone respect it. If those laws are tampering with our culture, let them be changed to suit our culture, but since it is still standing as law, let it be respected, else we descend into rascality. Try to understand that you must not force people to live like you. At this rate, a state will soon ban people from smoking cigarettes because the Governor doesn't like it or wearing skirts because the first lady is against it. You talked about $ex-a-thon, you dont need to tell me, but I know that you will gladly switch Nigeria for Sweden if you have the opportunity, and they just had, or is currently having a $ex-a-thon !
