A former legislator from a region in Northern Nigeria, speaking on Thursday, remarked that the recent surge in food prices was not a natural occurrence but a result of deliberate manipulation.
In a statement shared on an online platform, the social commentator pointed out that certain unethical individuals were exploiting the situation to inflate food prices, despite reports indicating a decrease in some regions.
"The recent reports of declining food prices in certain areas suggest a deliberate and artificial inflation orchestrated by unscrupulous actors capitalizing on the prevailing economic conditions," the former lawmaker stated.
The economic strain experienced nationwide has led to a significant rise in the cost of essential food items. Additionally, reports have linked food scarcity to both hoarding practices and illicit cross-border trade with neighboring nations.
Recent revelations from Vice President Kashim Shettima unveiled the discovery of 32 unauthorized passages used for smuggling goods, including food items, out of Nigeria. Security personnel successfully intercepted 45 trucks loaded with maize destined for these neighboring countries.
Shettima highlighted that the interception of these trucks resulted in a noticeable decrease in the price of maize by N10,000, dropping from N60,000 to N50,000 per unit.
