A heartbreaking tragedy struck the Oregbeni area of Benin-Agbor Road in Edo State on Tuesday, May 7, 2025, as 32-year-old fashion designer, Mrs. Sarah David, and her three-month-old daughter were electrocuted while wading through a flooded street following a heavy downpour.
According to eyewitness accounts, Mrs. David had her infant strapped to her back when she unknowingly stepped on a live electric cable that had fallen from an overhead pole and was submerged beneath the floodwater.
“She didn’t see the cable. It was hidden under the water,” said one resident, describing the moment that claimed both mother and child. “She was walking home and got electrocuted instantly.”
A second child, who was also with her at the time, narrowly escaped the same fate thanks to the intervention of a young man who diverted the child through a safer path just moments before the tragedy occurred.
“If that young man hadn't taken the child, all three would have died,” the eyewitness added.
Following the incident, residents quickly contacted officials of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), urging them to cut off power in the area to allow safe recovery of the bodies. The corpses were eventually removed with assistance from local residents and officers from the Oregbeni Police Division.
The devastating loss has plunged the David family into mourning. Her husband, Mr. Samuel Ibom, who hails from Ebonyi State, revealed that his wife was the family’s main breadwinner and a skilled fashion designer.
“I just got a new job days ago. She was supporting the family with her tailoring work,” he said in tears.
In a desperate appeal, Mr. Ibom pleaded with government authorities and the public for assistance—not only to give his wife and child a proper burial but also to pay her outstanding bride price, a customary requirement before burial rites can be conducted.
“Please help me. I need to pay her bride price first before burying her and my baby,” he appealed.
The tragedy has once again highlighted the dangers posed by exposed electric cables, especially during rainy seasons, and the need for urgent infrastructure upgrades in flood-prone communities.
Residents have called on the Edo State government and BEDC to improve safety measures and ensure fallen cables are promptly repaired to avoid future loss of lives.
