In a sobering case before a Federal High Court in Osogbo, Osun State, Olayiwola Ishola, a security guard, faced charges of housebreaking and theft, shedding light on the dire economic circumstances faced by many Nigerians.
Ishola, entrusted with safeguarding properties in the Keystone Bank area of Osogbo, was accused of unlawfully breaking into a shop owned by Yusuff Kazeem Deji and pilfering clothing items, trousers, belts, and boxers valued at N448,000.
Admitting guilt to the charge, Ishola, who lacked legal representation, confessed to the court that economic hardship compelled him to commit the crime, as his meager salary failed to adequately support his family.
Consequently, Justice Mashkur Salisu, taking into account Ishola's plea for leniency and the welfare of his dependents, sentenced him to 15 months imprisonment in line with the provisions of Sections 416 and 460 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015.
The case underscores the challenges faced by many Nigerians amid the nation's economic downturn and serves as a reminder of the complex social and economic factors that contribute to criminal behavior.
